3. Thickness
As I mentioned earlier, teak veneer comes in different thicknesses. Thinner veneers are generally more bendable than thicker ones. A veneer that’s around 0.6mm thick will be much easier to curve than one that’s 2.5mm thick. If you’re aiming for tight curves, it’s best to go with a thinner veneer.
Methods of Bending Teak Veneer
1. Steam Bending
Steam bending is a classic method. You expose the veneer to steam, which softens the wood fibers. First, you’ll need a steam box. You can either buy one or make a simple one at home using a large plastic container and a steam generator.
Once you’ve got your steam box ready, place the teak veneer inside and let it steam for a while. The time will depend on the thickness of the veneer, but usually, it’s around 10 – 20 minutes for a 1 – 2mm thick veneer. After that, quickly remove the veneer and bend it around a form.
